USA Junior T&F 1500m Prelims Complete Results

EUGENE, Ore.
- Metro State's Anthony Luna finished 24th out of 36 runners in the 800 meters prelims at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday.  The championships concluded on Sunday.  Freshman Scott Ingram placed 14th out of 22 runners in the 1500 meter run prelims at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.  He missed qualifying for the finals by two places.

2009 Learfield Directors' Cup Standings

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Metro State's athletic teams capped off their most successful year in school history by finishing 13th nationally in the 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, rating the success of 232 NCAA Division II schools in the country.  The standings are determined by a scoring system that ranks success at the national level in 27 sports.  Each school is scored on only 14 of those 27 sports to ensure equality among schools that sponsor a different number of sports.  This was Metro State's highest final ranking in school history.  Its previous best year was in 1999 as the Roadrunners finished in 22nd place.

Metro State's Anthony Luna broke his own school record for the second time in less than a week in the 800 meter run, breaking it at the American Milers Club Series in Indianapolis, Ind., on Wednesday evening.  Additionally, Luna became the first Roadrunner to qualify for the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in school history.

Metro State had three former student-athletes represented on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's all-time men's and women's tennis teams, released on Wednesday.  Current senior Sascha Ruckelshausen was on the men's team, while current head coach and former player Rebecca Meares and her sister Jessica Meares were both named to the women's team.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Metro State's Anthony Luna broke his own school record in the 800 meter run on Saturday, competing at the American Milers Club track meet in Indianapolis, Ind.  He ran the race in 1:48.51, breaking his own record of 1:49.25 set in 2008.  He also took fourth in his heat, finishing behind three professional runners.  The winner finished less than half a second ahead of Luna in 1:48.27.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Metro State baseball standout Matt McConnell was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Thursday.  McConnell is the ninth player in Metro State history to be drafted and will become the 14th player to sign a professional contract with a Major League Baseball team.  He is the first Roadrunner drafted since 2004 when Blake Eager was selected in the 30th round by the New York Mets.  Clint Cleland was the last to sign a professional contract, signing with the San Diego Padres in 2005.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Metro State's Jesse Wagstaff (men's basketball) and Mitra Hirad (women's tennis) were both named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Honor Student-Athletes on Thursday by the conference office.  Each of the 14 schools in the RMAC chooses on male and one female student-athlete to represent the school.  To be eligible for the RMAC Honor Student-Athlete award, individuals must be an athlete in one of the conference sponsored championship sports; carry at least a 3.20 Grade Point Average (GPA); be either a starter or key reserve on their respective team; be of good character and must have participated at the active member institution for two (2) or more seasons in at least one (1) sport. True freshmen and first year transfers are not eligible for this award.

DENVER, Colo. - Metro State's baseball tryouts scheduled for Friday, June 5, have been postponed due to wet field conditions from rain this week. A new tryout date is yet to be announced. To try out, student-athletes must have eligibility remaining and will need to bring a physical examination within the past six months.
